Juhani Pallasmaa, a finnish architect who has been dealing with perception in and of architecture during his whole career, emphasizes that in contrast to our impression of architecture as a dominantly visual experience, it is actually a multi-sensory one, where in his view seven realms of sensory experience – eye, ear, nose, skin, tongue, skeleton and muscle – interact and infuse each other to generate our experience. (cf.Pallasmaa, 2011)
In fact, architecture could be understood as creating a space that in itself could be experienced, but furthermore a place where experiences happen. However, architects often only consider the visual and performative aspects of a structure, instead of embracing the variety of senses that could be served and invigorated by any kind of architectural manifestation on earth.
