The research project “Musch & Lun. Architects, entrepreneurs and politicians of the Gründerzeit in South Tyrol” is to close a gap in the architectural and cultural history of South Tyrol. Musch & Lun – Bureau for Architecture & Civil Engineering in Merano, led by architect Josef Musch (1852-1928) and engineer Carl Lun (1853–1925) was an artistic and technological dominating construction company in South Tyrol from approximately 1880 to 1930. In addition to his work as an entrepreneur, Carl Lun also worked in various associations and in politics—both areas in which he worked tirelessly for urban planning tasks and for the realisation of projects that promoted the economic and social development of Merano and South Tyrol. Musch & Lun were therefore not only building contractors, but also influential entrepreneurs with international networks, which provided valuable impulses for the realization of sustainable economic and social initiatives. Within the framework of the investigations, the individual buildings and projects of Musch & Lun are examined and interpreted in terms of architectural and stylistic history, but also shed light on the actors-network constellations associated with their entrepreneurships.
